Our History

Chattanooga Food Center

Started in 2019 as the Chattanooga Food Center, the mission has remained the same from the start: to provide access, education, and engagement with locally grown food. From the beginning, these three words have guided our mission and the belief that everyone deserves to live in a place where good food is abundant, affordable, and nourishing.

Transitioning to Gaining Ground

The success of our grocery project, Gaining Ground Grocery, led us to make the decision to simplify our nonprofit organization’s name from Chattanooga Food Center to Gaining Ground, although we are much more than a grocery store! We offer a variety of regular educational programs to connect our community to local and healthy sources of food and how to prepare it.

Did you know?

Did you know the three leaves of our logo mark represent the three parts of our mission: access, education, and engagement? You will continue to see the three leaves in other Gaining Ground programs as we continue to expand our services.

Chattanooga Food Coalition

The Chattanooga Food Coalition is a community-supported advocacy group that Gaining Ground fiscally sponsors. We believe strongly in community-led coalition building for a better food system!
